Reading development among monolingual Swedish-speaking and bilingual Finnish–Swedish children from Grade 1 to Grade 3

The purpose of the study was to investigate how the reading skills of monolingual Swedish (n = 269) and bilingual Finnish–Swedish (n = 229) children in Swedish-medium schools in Finland develop from Grade 1 to Grade 3 and how vocabulary, rapid automatized naming and decoding speed in Grade 1 predict reading fluency and comprehension in Grade 3.

In this study, the aim is to explore what genres can be found in applications used in preschool as a way to facilitate preschool teachers’ informed choices and raise awareness concerning the importance of choosing digital content carefully. In particular, applications that facilitate communication beyond a verbal majority language are in focus in this study.
