Depicting death for children – analysing how death is portrayed in stylistic different ways in children’s picture books

Using children’s literature in different formats is a well-established pedagogical approach for discussing existential questions with young children. This study analyses two books: Goodbye, Mr. Muffin and The Visit from Little Death. The linguistic and visual analyses shed light on the narrative structures, participant roles, and various semiotic elements in these books.

The impact of reading medium on text comprehension among vocational students

Reading development among monolingual Swedish-speaking and bilingual Finnish–Swedish children from Grade 1 to Grade 3

The purpose of the study was to investigate how the reading skills of monolingual Swedish (n = 269) and bilingual Finnish–Swedish (n = 229) children in Swedish-medium schools in Finland develop from Grade 1 to Grade 3 and how vocabulary, rapid automatized naming and decoding speed in Grade 1 predict reading fluency and comprehension in Grade 3.
