The purpose of the study was to investigate how the reading skills of monolingual Swedish (n = 269) and bilingual Finnish–Swedish (n = 229) children in Swedish-medium schools in Finland develop from Grade 1 to Grade 3 and how vocabulary, rapid automatized naming and decoding speed in Grade 1 predict reading fluency and comprehension in Grade 3.

Research indicates that speaking multiple languages at home does not hinder children's academic progress and can even enhance their performance, write Valeria Maria Rigobon and Rauno Parrila from Australian Catholic University. Parents should focus on building a supportive community that values both English and home languages to sustain children's motivation and growth.

Finska, meänkieli och samiska är centrala språk i Norrbotten, och de har en längre historia än svenska bland talargrupper.
