The Swedish “experiment” with marketization: Evidence on three decades of school segregation in an urban school market

The educational reforms that encompassed school choice, vouchers, and for-profit private schools in Sweden during the 1990s transformed the public comprehensive school system through a process of marketization. The focus of this study is Sweden's largest urban upper secondary school market, the Stockholm region, following these reforms for nearly 30 years. (pdf)

Skolvalet har inte minskat sambandet mellan var elever bor och vilka skolor de går i. Samtidigt har uppdelningen mellan elever med olika socioekonomisk bakgrund och betyg ökat under de senaste tre decennierna. Det visar en studie av Stockholmsregionens gymnasiemarknad från Göteborgs och Uppsala universitet.

Hur det fria skolvalet genomförs kan skilja sig stort mellan olika kommuner och både aktiva och passiva föräldrar kan missgynnas. Besluten fattas oftast av enskilda tjänstepersoner. Nu får forskaren Hanna Sjögren finansiering från Vetenskapsrådet för att undersöka alla kommuner i Sverige.
