Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a big change for students. As schools begin to turn their minds towards student transition activities for the 2026 school year, new international research shines a light on the impact of student absenteeism during these transition years. Antecedents of developmental trajectories of school absences among adolescents

School absenteeism is a growing problem. To develop targeted interventions for different types of individuals, more knowledge of underlying risk and protective factors is needed. This study examined the developmental trajectories of school absences from primary school (Grade 6) to lower secondary school (Grade 9) and related risk and protective factors.

School attendance problems (SAPs) have implications for children’s and adolescents’ academic, social, and personal development. Previous research has mainly been conducted using quantitative methods.
