Gunvor Løkken and Thomas Moser discuss in detail the concepts of ‘materiality’ and ‘space’ and present the ways in which they are used within a research project that has generated the rich data presented in the articles of the thematic section. Using a multitude of data collection techniques that draw on ethnographic approaches to researching kindergarten cultures, the authors explore various aspects of pedagogy and meaning-making modes through the use of materials and space, and the roles that actors (teachers and children) play within them.
