School districts across the country have begun punishing students by forcing them into online classes, sometimes indefinitely. Research shows that students of color or with disabilities comprise a sizable chunk of in-school and out-of-school suspensions.

Many teachers are beginning to use AI such as ChatGPT as an educational tool in the classroom, acknowledging both the technology's potential benefits and limitations in order to introduce their students to a useful new tool while maintaining academic integrity.

"If educators can reclaim their time by using generative AI to do the mundane tasks, they can get back to doing some of the fun stuff that made them get into teaching,” says one school district director of technology.

History teacher Matthew Fulford has adapted his essay assignments to adjust to student accessibility to AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT. Fulford now breaks his essay assignments into parts - research, writing, documentation - and grades each separately to reward students' problem solving and creative efforts.

As the US works to develop policies on the use of artificial intelligence in education, some other countries are implementing AI in classrooms.
